Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
