The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
