England and Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
