European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
