In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
