WHO Sounds Warning Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Under a tenth of patients eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy are able to get them, states the global health agency as it releases its initial recommendations on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to universal availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, notes the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Despite the present best projected case, the production of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the WHO.

The advice encourages countries and companies to widen availability, via measures including voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the primary component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and increase satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Patients usually start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Research suggests people may see weight return after a year of stopping the drug, as their typical hunger resume.

To be overweight or obese elevates your risk for experiencing health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in every country and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
